Bah

Bah Humbug. I was busy at work today. Boo hoo.

Speaking of boo hoo- does this chick sound like a big whiner?

In other news- Patrick has a test site up for Tracks. Read about it here. Anyone use similar GTD software? What about GTD at all?

More Musings

Add this to the rules of life:

No pachinko machine should cost more than $200.

Is anyone watching the new novela “Asi Es La Vida”? Or is it just me? Hot ladies. . . great show so far. I’m having a tough time with the accents though- anyone know where they make the show? Colombia? Sounds Colombian but looks European in the sets sometimes. Very confusing.

I have some new movie (dvd) reviews coming up. I’ll post them soon. Speaking of- does anyone want to meet me at the Embarcadero in the next few weeks to see “A Scanner Darkly”?

I also need to post some info about some new wines. . . I’ll get on that. I’m spending too much time leaving snarky comments on Angie’s blog though. . .

Einstein

Angie1′s comment here and here are due to me being a dicksmartass and trying to be humorous by making this pic using this tool.

Shantaram

My friend, Kristen, recently loaned me a book that she loved and thought I would like. It’s called Shantaram and was written by Gregory Roberts. It’s supposedly a roman a clef (presumably to change names?) and is based on Robert’s real life. The premise is that the main character, an Australian, escapes from Prison and makes his way to Bombay where he can be anonymous although he falls in with the people there, and especially the underworld.

It’s actually a good read and I read it pretty quickly despite it’s hefty 956 pages. I’d recommend it to most of you- especially those of you looking for your next work of fiction for your wine drinkingbook club.

I’d actually like to know what some of you think about certain things, but I don’t want to mention them here because of “spolers”, etc.

There are also a lot of good quotes in the book. Some that I liked:

On whisky:

‘After all, what is the point of a man returning from the dead, if it is not to drink strong spirits with his friends.’

‘My dear friend, you can stand to eat a meal- if you must – and you can stand to make love – if you are able – but it is impossible to stand and drink whisky. It is the act of a barbarian. A man who stands up to drink a noble alcohol like whisky, in all but a toast to some noble thing or purpose, is a beast- a man who will stop at nothing.’

On fanatacism:

‘Fanatacism is the opposite of love,’ I said, recalling one of Khaderbhai’s lectures. ‘A wise man once told me-he’s a Muslim, but the way- that he has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded Jew than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. He has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded Christian or Buddhist or Hindu than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. I agree with him, and I feel the same way. I also agree with Churchill, who once defined a fanatic as someone who won’t change his mind, and can’t change the subject.’

On love(?):

Didier, trying to warn me, trying to help me or save me, perhaps, had said once that nothing grieves more deeply or pathetically than one half of a great love that isn’t meant to be.

Mmmm Q

You know what I like? Clement St. I like being lazy on the weekends and going there just to wander. On Saturday, there were some Chinese Lion Dancers. On Sunday, there weren’t a lot of people out (the heat?) and since Will was in town, we hit Q for the requisite Sunday breakfast of chilaquiles. Mmmm.

RIP Mako

Mako died. :( If you don’t know him by name, you’d recognize his photo. For those of you who know the “What is best in life” speech from Conan memorized, then you’ll know that Mako was the sorcerer in Conan. (note: Mako doesn’t give the “What is best in life speech”, Conan does- and it’s not really a speech, just a credo.) Mako was in a ton of projects. . . . :(

In the comments, leave your favorite Mako role/movie.

Golden Star in Chinatown. . . mmmm pho!

Kevin and I went here for lunch today- we were going to hit “The Dungeon”, but we both wanted Pho . . . . so he took me here. Damn good. We lucked out and got there at the right time too, it packed up with a line out the door after we got a table.

PennAve

Patrick has PennAve up and running on one of his test boxes. Although I still haven’t tried it on my ancient boxes, he has a demo site up and running. More info on this post

I tried to install f-spot on my main desktop, but I started down a dependency hell- well, more accurately, a hell of out-dated libraries. I really should get a new machine one of these days. . . I’ll see if I can get Picasa running now that there’s a Linux version out, but I bet I’ll run into the same problems. We’ll see. In the meantime I got my phone working so I can upload photos straight from the crappy phone camera to my flickr account.
