You asked- “yo, Ken-dog, how come you haven’t posted any wine recs in a while?”
Well, the reason is that I like to post recommendations that my Texans can go and find just like my Cali peeps. And lately I’ve been haven’t found much on the sites in the Lone Star State.
Granted sometimes I give up looking because of things like getting frustrated with the search functionality on a site like Spec’s or hearing about a distributor issue. And honestly, a lot of times I wind up buying a wine directly from the winery or a direct import at a store like K&L and I know you kids can’t get your hands on it.
And I realized I’m wrong about those last few points- any of you could sign up on the lists of the winemakers I like. And K&L does ship to TX. So why I’m going to start posting up notable bottles again. I just wish there were local stores in TX that I could search online from here and send you to them for your purchase (there may be- we’ll find out).
So here are some wines you should go out and get-
The first one was in my monthly budget club purchase at K&L – it’s $9.99 (it’s still only $12 if you’re not in one of their clubs). That’s right- under 10 bucks AND IT’S GOOD. 2009 Ferrero Toscana Rosso IGT. It’s mostly a cab and merlot blend and is great for a winter weeknight (or weekend). Grab a take-and-bake pizza from your favorite pizzeria and pop one of these open.
The other wine recommendation is a Pinot and it’s only $15. It’s from K&L’s Kalinda label and I didn’t realize it was from NZ until later when I went to look up more details about what I bought. When I was drinking it I thought it was something local like a Paso Robles pinot. Really good balance of fruit and some subtle spice. Go pick some up (or order it if you’re in TX).
