Some recaps on things I watched on recent flights and layovers:
Youth Without Youth – ***1/2 – I enjoyed most of the movie but not the last third. Tim Roth was great (and so was the German actress). Interesting premise but I think it was a bit too into itself towards the conclusion. But hey, maybe it just went over my head.
Louis CK at the Beacon – *** – Nice act, I got some side-glances for giggling on the flight. [link]
Stardust – **** I really enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Something about the De Niro character felt over the top and campy/cliched, but overall I liked the movie. Cute story. I wasn’t even distracted by Claire Dane’s accent. Actually all of the actors were really good. I liked the bit about the brother princes dying off as well.
Rob Delaney – Live at the Bowery – *** – I’m a big fan of Delaney on Twitter – first time seeing any of his normal stand-up. I liked the show. Wasn’t as cerebral as I would have hoped but I wasn’t let down. And I got more glances on the flight for giggling. [link]

Pusher – ***1/2 (1996 original)- I guess I’ve liked every Nicole Winding Refn movie I’ve seen (so far). This one was depressing but I still really got into the story and the tension and even worried about the “protagonist” getting out of his spiraling-out-of-control situation. edit: I didn’t know until writing this that there were sequels and remakes/updates.
Hearts of Darkness – **** A documentary about the making of and the backstory involved with Apocalypse Now. Really interesting. All of the interview subjects are interesting – Milius, Coppola, George Lucas, all of the actors… etc.
Coda – *** A documentary about the making of Youth Without Youth. Interesting, but only because I had seen the subject movie on a previous flight (see above).
JCVD – *** WTH, I didn’t expect this movie. Really enjoyed this more than I thought I would [link]
Lockout – ** – not good at all – brainless- but, ya know what, it’s fun. It starts out fast with the action and doesn’t really let up until the end. It’s like a perfect B movie. [imdb ]
Volver – I had to power down my electronic device halfway through this Almodovar movie- so far though I’m really liking it. I need to finish it this week.
Seen any of these? Leave a comment about what you thought.
Ah….Volver…..Dad and I really liked it….I am a fan of Almodovar….usually…..tried to walk like Penelope Cruz but it was a “no go”…..like his homage to vintage films.
