No free pass for Muni youth plan

“I can hear a giant sucking sound coming out of San Francisco,” Haggerty said.

I don’t care if you are paraphrasing H. Ross or not sir. You still made me laugh this morning. Kudos.

rave: Red Bird Coffee

I realized I’ve been ranting too much and not raving enough. So here’s a quick rave: Red Bird Coffee. I finally ordered some espresso from Red Bird recently after reading about them on a coffee forum long ago. I really like it.

I bought both the Red Bird Espresso and the Blue Jaguar blend. I’ve been impressed with both. Their tasting notes are pretty darn accurate too. And I’m pulling lazy shots (barely timed, barely paying attention to my basket loads, etc) and they come out great.

Some of you may knock me for ordering coffee from Montana, I get that. I’m pretty lucky here and can rotate through a lot of local roasters as I tire of blends or want to try something new- and sometimes new for me is from far away. But a lot of you can’t stay local too much either- so buddy up with a coworker or pal who’s a coffee nut as well and try out Red Bird and save on shipping together. Mmm

Parents call school photo offensive, degrading

As someone very familiar with school photos needing editing,  I can sympathize with the photographer (a little).

At least he kept his notes about the consent form. But sheesh, the kid’s in the front row- he needed to re-take the photo. And… well crap, just look at the pic below.

As he tells it, after the picture was taken a liaison with the Parent Teachers Association, that helped organize the photo shoot at the school, notified them that two of the students pictured needed to be removed because their parents did not sign a consent form.Claussen said he was able to use the photo editing software Adobe Photoshop to lift one of the kids out, but had explained to them that there was a problem with the second student. He was sitting in the front row, right in the middle. He showed me the notes he had written down on a white piece of paper as the pair discussed what to do. He said he would have gladly come out there to reshoot the image. Instead there was talk about putting a star over his face and then, he said,  the P.T.A. asked him to place a smiley face.

Sad story all around. There are quite a few “long” intersections that you need to be careful with the timing of the lights when you’re riding. There are a few on Market (at Geary? No, Maybe O’Farrell. And again at 4th) that you really need to stop immediately if the light turns yellow. Combine that with other corners where Peds are ready to jump into the street the second the crossing sign comes on without looking both ways and you have a dangerous mix during rush hour.

“I really hope he ends up OK,” he wrote. However, he wrote that the moral of the story of his collision was the importance of wearing a helmet, eliciting critical comments from other members.”Not sure thats the moral of the story,” one member replied. Another member wrote that the real moral of the story is to slow down, “especially when blasting through busy parts of town during rush hour.”

The Woman Aroused by Ed Lacy – ***

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was one of the weirder pulp books I’ve read. I picked it up randomly along with a bunch of other pulp titles. Looking it up later realized it was a first novel from the author and published it under a pseudonym and had many other titles.

I enjoyed the writing style and the period language and themes. I enjoyed the protagonist’s quirks and hobbies- horses, sure, but dancing?! I wondered how one would update the language, neighborhoods and crime if a publisher wanted to updated for current times.

The only problem was the plot lost me about 3/4ths of the way through the book- I liked the characters, the setup, the crime, and the intrigue, but was left feeling wanting when it was time for resolution. The ending just seemed a bit rushed to me. Or maybe it wasn’t rushed, maybe I just didn’t like the ending?

There are a lot of titles available for e-readers from the author. I may try some other stories and see what they’re like.
