Dexter in the Dark

Dexter in the Dark (Dexter, #3) Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsay

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I still enjoy this series and cast of characters, but this third book was a bit of a departure from the others. Lindsay brings in a touch of the spiritual world to Dexter’s life. Dexter’s usually doing a lot of self-reflection about who he is and what makes him this way- and there’s even more of that in this story as he loses his ‘dark passenger’.

Also – The author introduces an “Other” (capitalized in the book) as Dexter’s foil in the story and using his perspective interspersed in the narration took me a bit to get used to. I’m not sure I liked it, or that it was even needed.

If I could give this half stars I would bump the rating down to 2.5 just because of the possession/spiritual themes. Using fantasy elements makes the story less intriguing for me as then it’s no longer about the evil that men do… but the evil that is done by men when they’re possessed by an older evil spirit…
