Ouch

So this morning as I’m walking out the door to go to work this guy and his son were riding down the street. The kid, who had to have been five or six at the most, was on one of those tandem extension bikes- that’s probably not the right name for the bike, but basically the dad was on his mountain bike, and fastened to his seat post is an extension that goes to the kid’s bike, which isn’t a full bike, just a rear seat main tubes, pedals that may not do much and handlebars. They seemed to be cruising along at a decent clip, but as I was walking I heard the dad say something like:

“Faster? Ok, here we go, hang on!”
then >CLICK<
>BOOM<
…silence…
>WAHHH<.

Basically, the tube to the kid’s tandem section uncoupled when daddy hit a small bump and the kid faceplanted and rolled a bit. Not only did I hear it, but the guys painting the house next door heard it, and people at the (other) end of my street heard the crash. I just shook my head a bit and said “ow” to myself when I saw that the kids was okay.

The painters basically called the dad a retard in spanish and talked about how they were lucky there weren’t more cars on the street. I agree- The kid was lucky he wasn’t hurt more than he was- he was just boo-hoo’ing a bit, he was alright. But crap- my street’s dangerous in the morning and at 4pm- there are some (other) retards who drive these volvos – and let’s not pull any punches, but volvo station wagon drivers aren’t the best drivers (and it’s a known fact that they can’t park)- and come close to hitting anything and everything.

Oh here’s a pic of the thing I was talking about
tandem thing
